Review of 30 Days of Night: Dark Days (2010) by Dayna B — 01 Nov 2010
Whatever merits the first film had, dubious though they may be, this film lacks. One of the only things I really enjoyed about the first one was that they broke away from the idiocy of the 'dreamy vampire' and brought them back to what they should be; disgusting, slobbering monsters that feed on human blood.
Gone was the romantic pretense of the emotionally detached, unattainable man (or occasionally woman). Instead, they were nasty, dirty, snaggletoothed animals that descended upon a lonely town like a plague.
Well, that's toned way down in this film, with Mia Kirshner looking pretty hot, and several of the vampires at least leaning toward sexy. Also gone was the siege vibe of the first film, replaced with the standard, 'let's idiotically blunder into the vampire nest with no plan' sequences.
The gore was OK, and there were some very occasional clever bits in the script. But the story is dull and the film is never engaging. And boy howdy is the sex scene out of place and unsexy.
