Review of 3 Women (1977) by Tor M — 19 Aug 2012
I believe this is my first Altman film, and boy - it is surely something. Based on the director's dreams this is naturally weird and hard to understand. At times doesn't make much sense. It's artsy, hazy and interesting. The title is a reason for why you feel interested, it can make you wonder. I wondered a lot while watching this film - my mind tried to cope with the film by constantly trying to understand it.
This abstract and unusual film is hard to define. Sometimes it's creepy and mysterious. It's also humor-filled and very well casted. Duvall shines in her role as Millie - the fine girl that never seem to get attention. Weird, actually. Spacek does a great job portraying the quite weird and alternative girl, Pinky. Personality transitions and the story itself goes great with loads of elements in the film. Like Willie's great paintings and the score. That one song - it's super!
The film is a lot like Bergman's "Persona" I have heard and I look forward to see it as well. This bizarre ride was definately something to watch and it will definatly grow on me - so far it has. The only negative aspects here are the fact that you won't get it right. Even after 10 views I'm sure you won't "nail" it. That doesen't necessarily make it bad though, it's fitting - but it's still a film that is hard to "finish" or "leave behind".
