Review of 3 Women (1977) by Jonathan A — 28 Apr 2007
'3 Women', directed and written by the great Robert Altman, is probably his most perfect film. Unfortunately, this film is for true film buffs for many reasons, not the least because it requires multiple viewings to understand it but the film is so compelling and interesting that you end up wanting to watch it again as soon as it is over.
Anyone who has ever dismissed Shelley Duvall as an actress (myself included) will be proved wrong here. This is Duvall's greatest performance and she definitely deserved her Best Actress award at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival. Sissy Spacek is also great.
You really get to see some of Altman's influences in this film (his love of Bergman and 'Persona', mainly) and the surreal atonal musical score works great. Altman was America's greatest director and he sadly died last year (without even winning a competitive Academy Award). He is now officially a legend.
10 out of 10 stars.
