Review of 3 Needles (2005) by Radhika N — 21 Sep 2007
A public service movie in a way. What was confusing was that in the end the voice over claims that part of the reason humanity doesn't band together to fight this virus is because of the different beliefs in god.
But the issue of religious beliefs is not really developed in the stories and only arises in the case of the missionaries in Africa. Of the three stories, the one that seemed the best developed was the chinese one with Lucy Liu.
I loved the last sentence mouthed by an old rural tribal in that segment who remarks on the test center charging him $10 for an HIV/AIDS test: They only gave me $5 when giving me the disease. It is never clarified however, why Liu's character was out collecting all that blood and how she would make money with it.
The canadian story with the mother and son duo who use AIDS for money to live was the least sympathetic and believable to me, especially what the mother does, but what do I know. The African story just dwells on the tragedy that is Africa in the current times and the blinkered views of 2 of the 3 missionaries there to "salvage souls" for their denomination.
