Review of 3 Needles (2005) by Yalan Z — 03 Feb 2008
I couldn't get over Lucy Liu's awkward Mandarin. At least, I think it was Mandarin. I can think of ten million other Chinese actresses who could've played Lucy's part and not torture me with their mangled Mandarin, but hey.
This film has very good intentions and I'm sure it means well, but its execution borders on over-the-top, especially the Canada arc. I wasn't really drawn into any of the stories either, except maybe the Canada one, but I suspect that had more to do with Shawn Ashmore's cuteness than anything else.
The Africa story was particularly disappointing. I was expecting...more. The "sacrifice" Chloe S's character made was predictable and therefore failed to have any real impact. And I really would have found the China plot, some parts of which brought me to near tears, a lot more moving if Lucy Liu could actually speak Mandarin.
Or whatever it was she was speaking.
