Review of 3-Iron (2004) by Sabrina I — 22 Jul 2011
3-IRON is one of the most beautiful love stories ever told. It's so human. The director Ki-duk Kim completely understands people and human nature. We see our two characters find joy and satisfaction in just the most common activities.
They barely communicate with words. Its more through looks, gestures and actions. When he cooks lunch for her he expresses how much he cares. Both characters are clearly outsiders in society - neither following the unspoken rules.
They are not concerned with that. They have found their own spiritual and emotional connections. They have created their own little world - everyone else be damned. It's interesting how Hee Jae's good intentions are constantly misunderstood by everyone.
We are pre-disposed to how people should and should not behave. So, we assume the worst in people. We can't see the goodness in people anymore. 3-IRON also calls into question the true nature of happiness.
Perhaps in our desire to reach the top - we have forgotten how important it is to connect with one another on an honest level. The desire to connect with someone, to feel love for someone is greater than the desire for money or success.
We can live without luxury products but can we live a lonely life? This film has so many touching and beautiful moments. They way they look at eachother or kiss is like watching poetry in motion. The film leaves a lasting impression on your soul.
It should not be missed.
