Review of 28 Days Later (2002) by Seth Y — 11 Apr 2013
I must say, I'm not the biggest fan of the zombie genre (especially recent films). However, 28 Days Later is a grittier, lower-budget approach that has a more "realistic" feel (if that makes any sense). That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
After waking up in a deserted hospital, bicycle courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) has no idea what is going on. He wanders onto the empty streets of London, trying to figure out what has happened. After surviving an attack in an abandoned church, Jim runs into fellow survivors, who explain to him the deadly virus that has taken over. The entire population has nearly been wiped out, sending victims into a blood-thirsty, violent rage.
Danny Boyle is quickly making his way onto my list of favorite directors. I love his other work, which includes Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire, and 127 Hours. Because of this, I had really high hopes going into this film. Surely enough, it met my expectations. Cillian Murphy is outstanding, and I also loved Noamie Harris and Brendan Gleeson. As I previously mentioned, 28 Days Later has a raw, gritty feel to it, which adds to the suspense and thrill in my opinion. Although I felt the first half was a bit better than the second, overall this was a fun, entertaining viewing experience. 4 stars.
