Review of 28 Days Later (2002) by Andrew D — 20 Jun 2013
When a group of animal rights activists free some chimps that were subject to scientific study, they unknowingly unleash a virus that causes the circulatory system to speed up, making people attack other in fits of rage.
28 days afterwards, a man named Jim has woken up from a coma to the now infected-riddled United Kingdom. As he grows more accustomed to how the world has changed, Jim meets other survivors and tries to survive along with them.
What I love best about this film is that what Danny Boyle did to the zombie broke some new ground. Sure, these aren't traditional zombies since they aren't the recently dead, but it introduced the first fast zombies in the horror genre.
I'm not usually a fan of these types of "zombies," but the way Boyle directs it comes off as horrifying and disturbing (in a good, yet sick, way). The world that he has created for these infected makes them all the more terrifying.
The first scene when Jim is walking around a barren London creates a great amount of suspense and set up for the events to come. The acting among everyone is great. Cillian Murphy stands out as the best of the bunch because of his tone and facial expressions.
One can really believe that he's scared of the world that he's now living in, and it works really well. I also enjoyed the new rule for one to become infected, this being that now if you get one of the infected's blood or saliva in your mouth or eyes (or any other orifice), you become one of them.
Danny Boyle has without a doubt created one of the best and scariest horror films of all time. It's filled with tension that pays off well in the end and some pretty scary zombies. It's a film that I don't think will be forgotten for years (in fact, the ten year anniversary is only five days away and it still hasn't been forgotten) and will always be solidified as one of the scariest horror movies in history.
