Review of 25th Hour (2002) by Ross B — 29 Jan 2012
Spike Lee adapts David Benioff's book into a fairly compelling film. Edward Norton stars as Monty Brogan, who in 24 hours will be heading off to prison for 7 years after he was caught dealing drugs.
The film follows his last hours of freedom which he spends with his father (Brian Cox), his two best friends (Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Barry Pepper), and his girlfriend (Rosario Dawson). The acting is very well done in the film and that includes a supporting role by Anna Paquin as a student of Hoffman's.
The issue with the film is that it is very heavy handed at time. The scene that sticks out to me as the prime example of this is when Norton begins to have a conversation with himself in the mirror. His reflection then goes on a tirade about everything wrong with the City and its people.
It is a scene that was better when Lee did it in Do the Right Thing. On the whole the film is well done despite these flaws.
