Review of 24 Hour Party People (2002) by Jonathan B — 19 May 2013
It all starts with the then unknown Sex Pistols playing a Stooges cover to a room of 42 people, including one Tony Wilson, in Manchester, 1976. From there it's the story of Factory records, Madchester, Joy Division and Happy Mondays from the disarming perspective of Wilson, played brilliantly by Steve Coogan.
The Joy Division story parallels that from the excellent Control, which was from the perspective of Ian Curtis. While Party People lacks the intensity and emotional resonance of Control, it's lighter and certainly entertaining.
