Review of 10 Rillington Place (1971) by Jonathan B — 23 Oct 2018
Richard Attenborough portrays one of Britain's most infamous murderers John Christie who was responsible for the death of several woman in the late 1940s. What is remarkable and simultaneously terrifying about Christie is that he was such a mundane and dull little man and Attenborough portrays this with calculated accuracy.
The grim, post war period adds further to the grisly nature of this movie. It is unfalteringly dark and dour which only makes the murders seem more disquieting and pathetic. a young John Hurt plays the hapless fantasist, Timothy Evans who is wrongly hanged for the murder of his wife and baby, crimes that were only solved when the bodies of Christie's victims were found concealed behind walls, under floorboards or buried in the garden of his house.
10 Rillington Place is still a powerful and uneasy movie to watch that shows that true evil can be more banal than any found in the works of fiction.
