Review of 21 Grams (2003) by Ali Akbar F — 25 Aug 2009
21 Grams (2003) I have mixed feelings about this film. I rented this because I wanted to see some other works by the director of Amore Perros. It is long and slow 126 minutes. It is a somber look at the lives of 3 individuals and their families after an accident. 3 lives and stories intersect. Sometimes I do not connect well with films that have such a non linear format. Sean Penn was a little "over wrought" (and fake) in his role. There is no doubt the construction of the film is interesting and great colors cinematography etc.
The movie received nominations at the 2003 Academy Awards for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Benicio del Toro) and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Naomi Watts). It was also nominated for several BAFTA. It did not actually win any of the nominations. I just don't feel impressed enough to rate four stars or more (like Ebert and others here) Be sure and read the wiki entry about this movie. Not recommended for most audiences or family viewing as it is such a long bleak depressing affair. three or four stars. certainly one of the best films of 2003.
