Review of 2046 (2004) by Miller W — 08 Jan 2008
Beneath the layers of beautiful cinematography and hypnotic music, Wong Kar Wai builds real characters without sacrificing the romance that characterizes his films.
Tony Leung is womanizer, yet he is human enough for us to empathize. We see that who he has become is a result of the mysterious lost love (see "In the Mood for Love"). As he vicariously lives through Wong Faye's character's forbidden romance with a Japanese man, we see the lover he seeks to be, even if he fails in his own romances.
