Review of 2046 (2004) by Private U — 28 Jul 2009
All I could say last night was "Wow." This is one great film. This is my first Kar Wai Wong film, and I look forward to the rest. Not only a "must-see", but a "must-own". Tony Leung is awesome in his lead role, and Li Gong and Ziyi Zhang are so well cast (I'd like to see some new actresses in new roles however).
Though I only had a bit of Japanese in high school and don't speak any dialects of Chinese, the interspersement of Cantonese, Mandarin and Japanese is interesting (as it is obviously necessary to the story).
The art direction is gorgeous. Well done (and that's an understatement)! Again, I can't wait to educate myself more in this genre. While part of me doesn't want to give it such a high rating due to my own ignorance of this type of film, I must say I'm impressed.
