Sure, this film lacks the imagination and showmanship of its predecessor, but it is still a very entertaining, above-average science fiction film, even if it is sorely dated by US/Russian hostilities. Nine years after the Jupiter mission in 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, the Russians have built a ship to go to Jupiter and investigate.
Three Americans are along for the ride, as they know more about the first mission than the Russians do. Of course, strange things start happening in Jupiter space.
