It suffers in comparison to 2001 (as would any other sequel), and it's an enjoyable if somewhat unremarkable film that plays itself much more like a traditional sci-fi film than 2001's myriad metaphysical concerns.
Still, its story is very dated (though it wouldn't have been that scary even during the days of Reagan) and the dialogue banal.
