The whole point to 2001 is the whole film is a mysterious experience: what's going on, what are the monoliths, why did Kubrick make it the way he did? 2010 is the opposite. It's simply a popcorn movie that tries to fool the audience into thinking it's a thinking movie with a lesurly pace and mysterious soundtrack.
But it fails at being a popcorn movie because it tries to be 2001: The Sequel. Therefor, it seems stilted annd uneventful though some of the effects and modelwork is excellent. But ultimatly a major letdown.
