It doesn't have the lyrical beauty of 2001, and tries hard to explain things that were better off as ambiguities. The ending is also a letdown; it feels poorly thought out, and anticlimactic. It's still an engrossing film, however.
The sense of awe is palpable in moments, and there are genuinely tense moments.
