Review of 2010 (1984) by Jim P — 04 Jul 2008
Peter Hyams' adaptation of 2010, the Clarke sequel to the epic 2001, takes off with cold war animosity and newly realized effects, the beginnings of CG actually. In the sequel, a bit lacking and very dated, the crews of US and Soviet ships investigate Jupiter, where somehow the Discovery ship has been pulled to.
(They forgot it was Saturn in part 1). They wanted to captialize on the Voyager probe photos so they changed planets. The sequel is awfully dated though. Where the first predicted a future much advanced from 1969, or even 2008, the sequel steps back, not realizing that the Cold War would fail around 5 years later, and Russia would break apart, so that there would be no cold war politics.
By 2008, Russian and US ships frequent the space station, even though it looks nothing like the one in the movies. Still the special effect of blowing the stuffing out of Jupiter to make a star inspired dozens of riffs since.
That was just cool. It would totally frak the solar system, but it was cool.
