Review of 2010 (1984) by Tristan G — 27 Jul 2009

Firstly, this is no 2001: A Space Odyssey and it knows it. It is however, a very good sci-fi film in its own right though its Cold War undercurrents dates it more than 2001. Yes, the Star Trek-esque narration was a misstep, so was the preachy ending and the Russian craft designers seemed to have got their inspiration from Alien.

That said, it has some masterful suspense scenes, great atmosphere, fantastic special effects, good performances all around and most importantly its pretty smart. Probably would have been far better remembered if it didn't have to step out of 2001's shadow.
