Review of 2010 (1984) by Juha S — 20 Mar 2010
While 2001:A Space Odyssey was a genre, and cinema altering film, glorifying and mystifying the power of space and the unknown in the human experience, its sequel isn't quite so elegant. Set amidst Cold War tensions, this ham-fisted look at the events of 2001, takes this majesty and brutally flips it on its head.
Lacking most of the majesty (Im not blaming Hyams, no one can really make a movie like Stanley Kubrick), this version seems a more commercial endeavor, preying into the fear of the times, which while providing a thorough grounding to the movie that the ethereal 2001 nearly completely lacked, takes away the majesty of the story.
Overall, worth seeing to help understand the events of 2001, and a good story with good acting, but its seems to pose at odds with the universe previously set for it.
