Review of 2010 (1984) by Brian D — 07 Aug 2010
Before I watched this film and when I found out there was a sequel to Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey", I cringed. But this film is actually really very good.
The suspense is very high throughout the film, although Hyams did an amazingly fantastic job keeping the feel of Stanley Kubrick's original. Gone are the long interludes of film of planets along with classical music, but in it's place is a firmer, more cohesive plot that takes the best dramatic bits of the first film, condenses them and recreates the same feel for a new scenario.
This may be an extremely under-rated film, considering it's the follow up to one of the greatest films ever made. In terms of sequels, this is probably the greatest sequel ever made. But as we all know, people hate sequels (unless it's a useless action movie sequel) and so this film has been put on the back shelf. But there's nothing cheesy or campy here and it's amazing how it really maintains the same feel as the first movie.
Definitely a masterpiece movie, often over-looked. It deserves so much more praise than it actually received.
