Review of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) by Cameron J — 16 Oct 2013
Every shot in 2001: A Space Odyssey is long and slow. The epicness of this film is highly exaggerated, making the wonder of space and the threats at hand seem that much more intense. The movie transcends criticism for its slow pace and uneventful plot- it wasn't made to be a thriller or an action movie or a comedy.
The movie has little dialogue and the humanity it includes is minimal at best. "2001: A Space Odyssey" is a study of our small role in this grandiose universe, and we discover themes of humanity and adventure through big, colorful scenery rather than intricate dialogue and interesting plot twists.
Still, "2001" is notable for its villain, the magnificently mundane and therefore devastatingly scary HAL, a computer who is the root of many sci-fi villains who we have seen in recent years.
"Star Wars" was the genre's peak, but "2001" was the movie that started it all, the story of the greatest romance of all time- of man and the stars.
