Review of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) by John Y — 06 Nov 2013
If the movie followed the book more closely then it would have been MUCH better. This movie has some scenes which are absolutely stunning and beautiful, a real treat to watch. For that I give it two stars.
I don't give it any more stars because the film is pretentious. I say that because the book lays everything out, has a good story, and makes more sense. The film is too vague on purpose!! If the intention was to be more vague so that the viewer can piece together his own story, ponder what everything means, reflect on the symbolism, etc.
etc. "it's deep man, you just don't understand it!" etc. then that's bullshit. The book lays everything out very well and the film is pretentious and vague on purpose. I don't call that artistic, I call that lazy.
I understand if money was an issue, but there are so many ways in which this overly hyped movie could have been improved.
