Review of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) by Nikhil U — 19 Nov 2013
#5.
Kubrick brings you the allegorical and philosophical space drama , "2001:A Space Odyssey". Kubrick is successful in establishing "2001" as the superior to all Sci-fi movies ever released till date. Undoubtedly a classic, "2001" requires a great deal of thought process to understand the message it conveys and the explanation of the events which transpires in the movie. Kubrick divides "2001" into four parts, each closely related and each of them transpiring in different time periods. Dawn of Man, showcases the achievement of the earliest form of humans, the hominids , to make the startling discovery of "tools".
As the time periods shifts, the film digs deep into the relation between man and his tools. At the same time, it also portrays the evolution of Man, from Hominid to humans and from Humans to the final evolution, the Starchild. "2001" starts of as a mystery hunt behind the extra terrestrial monolith, which eventually leads to the climax, where different perceptions create a meaning of great value. Kubrick has ensured that every detail leading to the purpose of the story has been showcased subtly, without any extensive explanation, just simple and subtle details which forces the viewer to think more and more about the happenings in the film . Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick have created a marvel with the combination of Science-fiction, philosophy , allegory and fantasy.
"2001" unfolds the deepest thoughts about mankind's evolution. It is a boundless collection of ideas and theories.
To quote Arthur C. Clarke " If you understand the explanation of the movie by watching it a single time, then we have failed in our attempt".
Correctly said, "2001" is a bit confusing but the more you watch it over and over again, the more you get inclined towards the purpose of this film.
A true classic and a timeless masterpiece.
