Review of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) by Daniel M — 19 Oct 2015
A masterpiece beyond words to describe it. Long close to 2.5 hr film but not long enough in mesmerising me. It was a hugely ambitious film about time space and the mystery of the universe. Under the visionary genius hands of Kubrick and Clarke and the beautiful music of Johannes Strauss´ waltz, we embarked on a long journey, beginning at the dawn of time with apes and the sudden appearance of a black marble monolith, My guess of the perfectly formed monolith was that of a tablet with the words of God.
Kubrick´s expert use of Strauss waltzes and sound and visual effects bended our minds as we zoomed through thousand years to arrive at the space age 21st century. The second half of the film was a gripping drama of the super villainous computer complete with a expressive humanoid voice, that turned hostile on two waking and 3 hibernating astronauts with tragic consequences.
The outer space and spinning space stations and space crafts were breathtakingly beautifully realistic and not inferior to Cuaron´s recent Gravity even though 2001 was made 50 years earlier. An astounding achievement by Kubrick and at least half a century ahead of time.
