Review of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) by Ali M — 28 May 2008
James Mason is THE Hollywood defintion of Captain Nemo. Nobody could have been better cast in that role. As for Paul Lukas and Peter Lorre, they are both well-cast as Arronax and Conseil, but I'm not so sure Kirk Douglas was the right choice for Ned Land.
The film isn't really true to the spirit of Verne's novel- which was all about the wonders of scientific discovery- and spends more time on Ned's plans for rebellion, which gets annoying after awhile.
But the visuals are stupendous and anybody who hasn't read the Verne novel should be impressed... which I was to an extent.
