Review of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) by Curtis H — 25 Aug 2008
This is a slow and ponderous piece in modern cinema, but not without its virtues. The telling of Jule's Verne's classic is well done and many of the performers- James Mason (fantastic as the tormented Captain Nemo), and Peter Lorre-chief among them, do wonderful jobs.
On the whole, though, it doesn't strike you as anything more than the tale of the Nautilous in slow dialogue and old fashioned special effects. It leaves one wanting just a bit more of that excitement and wonder of Jules Verne.
