Review of 1776 (1972) by Samantha S — 19 Jul 2010
I love this musical. It is perhaps a bit too articulate and intelligent for modern audiences. Ken Howard is physically and emotionally perfect for Thomas Jefferson, same for Howard DaSilva as Franklin and William Daniels embodies the soul of John Adams.
Blythe Danner is lovely as Martha Jefferson. Same guys who wrote Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Best scenes are when Adams and Franklin are trying to get Jefferson to write the Declaration. One song missing from the Broadway version, sadly.
HIGHLY recommend.
