Review of 1408 (2007) by Oj H — 19 Aug 2015
The film had an interesting concept, and I thought the acting worked well(Sam Jackson hit his mark as did the films lead Cusack), but it did have it's holes. It was a bit rushed and the reversals and twists you could see a mile ahead... but the plot itself was weak. I enjoyed the movie on the first watch... but it wouldn't hold up on watch 2 and above. The production design was good(B) and the cinematography was good(B) but the direction wasn't as visual as I had hoped. For something that only takes place in a room, I'd hoped for a bit more artistry, and a feeling of claustrophobia... but instead, it felt very Hollywood "surface", as far as this went, so the direction(C) was blasé to put it bluntly.
It's worth a watch if you want a suspenseful genre film... but there were little scares, and you could walk away at any time, and not really miss out.
