Review of 13th (2016) by Isaac S — 17 Nov 2016
An incredibly eye opening documentary exposing the insanity of the for-profit prison system in the USA.
The USA has a 5% black population but the prisons are overwhelmingly full of minorities who got there from racist laws written by ALEC lobbyists representing the prisons and companies that profit from imprisoning as many people as possible.
There's 2.5 million people in prison in the USA. The USA has more prisoners than any other nation by a massive amount, and it stems from "tough on crime" laws that target minorities disproportionately, and have been put in place by both Republican and Democratic presidents.
The documentary briefly touches on the #blacklivesmatter movement near the end.
There's an underlying racist thread in the USA that still exists today that goes like this: Slavery > 13th Amendment making slavery legal if you are a criminal > segregation > civil rights movement > Bill Clinton's mass incarceration (which he later apologizes for) > police brutality > Black Lives Matter.
