Review of 13 Tzameti (2006) by James S — 24 Jan 2008
Sometimes you come across a film that uses the device of monochrome with no clearly identifiable reason. This is very much the case with 13 Tzameti. Don't get me wrong, if coupled with standout performances, the black and white photography here could have contributed to a sense of grit and realism, but as a whole it doesn't mix well.
Performances are weak and emotionless - the actors seem to grasp where they should be standing and what they should be saying, but that has never been enough to captivate despite the interesting premise.
As a piece of art this is about as effective as using robot-headed replacements for an otherwise pitch-perfect remake of a Kubrick film. So close yet so far. Nevertheless as a first Directorial effort there is something here to keep a half-opened eye on.
