Review of 13 Assassins (2010) by Douglas C — 29 Jan 2013
Miike, known for brutal and unnerving films in the past brings all of his passion and skill to the forefront for this film. From the sweeping camerawork, set pieces and action set ups that easily best anything that Chow Yon Fat or Jet Li has done, Assassins is a feast for the eyes as well as the heart.
If you aren't a fan of subtitles as most viewers who aren't used to seeing foreign films are you shouldn't worry because the sheer visceral impact and sound of bones crunching, flesh being mangled and various decapitations will have u leaping out of your seat.
Apart from the apparent cruelty there are humorous asides specifically from the 14th "assassin" who provides the film with some surprising comic relief when the film might be able to use it.
If you are a fan of the director's previous work and are familiar with his style sit tight and strap yourself in but don't say you weren't warned.
