This film is devastating and heartbreaking in every sense of the word. The level of emotion that forms while viewing this film is indescribable. The movie is brutal to watch at times and the fact that this is a true story doesn't make it any easier to watch.
Its not an easy film to watch but it is an important film to watch. McQueen captures the harsh realities of a topic that many people (and filmmakers) tend to shy away from. I was literally shaking in so many scenes and thats the best compliment I can give to this kind of film.
This isn't my personal favorite of the year, but I am in no way disappointed that it won best picture. The great performances mixed with the brutally realistic direction make this one a classic. My only complaint is that the film feels rather long at time but it does add to the emphasis of how long twelve years is.
A beautiful and relevant film, completely worth experiencing.
