Review of 12 Years a Slave (2013) by Marks V — 11 Jul 2015
With the exception of Lupita Nyong'o (Patsey) I didn't feel any of the actors were able to deliver their ostensibly "old-American speech" lines in a believable way without sounding affected and stilted. I found that impossible to get past - much as I cringe when I hear Shakespearean actors delivering their awkward sounding lines without sounding remotely like anyone speaking naturally. Lupita manages to speak her lines in a 100% realistic and believable sounding delivery so she proves it actually can be done.
That aside I also didn't feel that the movie broke any new ground or was telling a story that hadn't already been covered in Roots. I think the movie got inflated ratings and awards because people see it as an "important" story - but that to me does not mean it automatically deserves high ratings for movie making.
