Review of 12 Years a Slave (2013) by Danny O — 06 May 2015

I appreciated this movie in individuals parts. Some actors delivered outstanding performances. Some scenes were incredibly shot. What didn't quite hold it together for me though as an entirety was the slowness of it all.

There seemed to be very little by way of plot movement and what made it feel even slower was the lack of check in points by way of time. 12 years is a long time, but as viewers, we don't have a true sense of how long is spent in each location or how much time is elapsing between scenes.

This would have helped, I think, and the pacing would have felt less flat.
