The method with which this film finds a way to deftly and organically present many tones, perspectives and consequences within the reality of slavery is truly remarkable. Rather than constantly lash you with inhumanity, it manages to stare back at you from a profound, often quiet and fully textured wound.
The desire to 'live and not just survive' radiates from the work of Chiwetel Ejiofor. It needs no loud triumphal moment because its hero never appears to be the one facing defeat.
