Review of 12 and Holding (2006) by Stephanie S — 29 Nov 2007
Shockingly bold, fresh, and intensely riveting. Powerful in its subtlety. Fascinating in its execution and gradual buildup.
Well directed with some strong performances throughout from several young actors and actresses. Sad yet highly realistic accounts of three kids dealing with lifes adversity in various ways trying to make sense out of confusion.
Zoe Weizenbaum and Conor Donovan in particular were quite good in their respective roles. I very much enjoyed seeing everything unfold from the childrens perspectives properly showcasing how damaging and hurtful adults can be towards their very own kids.
Annabella Sciorra and Jeremy Renner both turned in solid performances. Young Jesse Camacho had several standout scenes - one featuring him locking his mother in the basement with nothing but a few apples to munch on in his efforts to help her lose weight.
