Review of 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) by Ha Huy H — 05 Aug 2016
One of the most interesting movies I've seen of the year so far in its unconventional storytelling. The whole movie was built up as a thriller with an "apocalypse nutjob" trapping 2 people in a bunker, but it turns out to be way more surprising than that.
The thing about the build up is that we all have to question our own reality, who's lying, which is the truth, what's outside, we don't know, and we all have certain expectation, but the state of unknown is exciting and when the pay off comes, it's satisfying.
I personally think Mary Elizabeth Winstead carried the movie along with the help from the amazing John Goodman. Mostly because she was such an interesting and full of surprise character. She's not the usual helpless blonde girl in every other horror movie, but she is really capable, extremely smart, and full of fighting power.
Her character never stops making the movie exciting to watch because we could never guess what she's gonna do to escape the situation, and we care about her character. Simple, yet really entertaining and full of amazement,.
