Review of 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) by Fidel A — 02 Sep 2018
This movie is so much more about the mystery behind it than it is about its reveal. Working with a singular setting, Howard's bunker, throughout the entire film it manages to smoothly shift between atmospheres: from a group of friends having fun in a casual way, from a mystery waiting to be solved to a psychopathic murderer.
I also want to praise this movie for having gotten me genuinely attached to the characters. As it works with a small cast it clearly defines each of their personality: Michelle gives off the "lady in trouble" vibe to reveal to us how resourceful and smart yet bubbly she can be, Emmett is a humble young man willing to risk his life to protect others, and Howard is the emotionally unstable and aggressive patriarch.
10 Cloverfield Lane keeps you on the edge of your seat up until the end. And that is the movie's weak point. Whereas it smoothly shifted genres between a thriller, a comedy, a crime movie, and an apocalyptic setting, the science fiction at the end seems out of place and almost disappointing.
Nonetheless, this movie was a treat to watch and I highly recommend it.
