Review of 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) by Nikos R — 14 Feb 2018
10 Cloverfield Lane might not be the sequel to Cloverfield we had anticipated, but it stands on it's own as something unique. First time director Dan Trachtenberg has crafted a tense claustrophobic thriller.
10 Cloverfield Lane always keeps us on edge. Mary Elizabeth Winstead gives a great performance, as a strong and clever individual, in a very vulnerable position. John Goodman is nothing sort of terrific.
He has a very imposing presence and is able to showcase his range as an actor. He can seem friendly in one scene and subtly off-putting in the next. The movie keeps us second-guessing his true nature, while we are also never quite sure what is taking place outside the bunker.
The filmmakers take full advantage of the enclosed location and manage to subvert our expectations time and time again. There is a constant feeling of dread, as well as some nail-biting sequences. There is also some well placed humor to add levity to the grim setting.
Despite a somewhat underwhelming third act, 10 Cloverfield Lane is an excellent thriller, filled with compelling drama, high tension and paranoia.
