Review of 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) by Official C — 05 Jun 2016
Minor spoilers. A refreshing take on the sci-fi, alien/post apocalyptic genre. There were a few things that stood out. Firstly, there was very little music in the film compared to other films in this genre.
This made the two jump scares stand out as the music normally allows for anticipation of jump scares. They were very effective with only two as they are not predictable. Lack or music also means that in stressful situations you can even hear the characters labored breathing.
Excellent cinematography. The camera will focus on the whole scene then focus on a single face blurring the whole background out a few times brilliantly high lighting the facial expressions. This also shows brilliant acting.
Lastly, not showing the aliens until the end gives plenty of time for anticipation to build and therefore turns this into a great psychological thriller that puts focus on the psyche of someone in a post apocalyptic scenario until the final minutes of the film.
