Review of Virunga (2014) by Steven O — 27 Nov 2016
I give Virunga a strong 4 stars out of 5. The documentary about the Congo War and the struggles that face the animal preserve excels in showcasing the dangers of oil exploration, the tragedy of war, and the corrupt business that revolves around poaching.
The soundtrack, composed by Patrick Jonsonn, complemented the suspenseful and emotional moments scattered throughout the film. My only complaint is the lack of narrative given towards the affected locals from nearby villages, since they are the ones that come face-to-face with the dilemma of saving the primates or gaining the support of the guerrilla.
Other than that, the film excels in teaching the importance of preserving the ever-shrinking population of these primates and the current controversial events plaguing the Congo.
