Review of Van Diemen's Land (2009) by Steve P — 19 Sep 2009
This is a shocking (and I mean shocking!) true story about the depths of savagery humans to go to. Only one of these convicts was left because, as far as we know from his story, the others were all killed and eaten by the men until only he survived.
We often think of Tasmania (the contemporary name for Van Diemen's Land) as a beautiful place. The photography of this movie, however, has drained all the green from the place and we view a very dismal, oppressive, harsh landscape that reflects the horror of the story.
Superbly and subtly acted with occasional philosophical narration by the surviving convict. One example: 'I've looked up at God looking down. He dances with an axe in his hand.' Chilling.
