One of the great suspense film of all time. Ive always felt that this film is a great metaphor for life. We go through loaded with things that could go off and kill us at any second with no real explanation.

The fact that we get to the end is almost pure luck. Of course this is one way to see the film, but mostly the film works on pure white knuckle thrills. When we look at the first hour we do get another picture, Clouzot is clearly trying to make a statement about desperation and exploitation.

At the end he is also making a statement on confidence with the feeling that we have beaten life. The film works on thrill but I really feel it is trying to get a message across.
