Review of The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015) by Anthony B — 17 Aug 2015
The first four words were all it took for The Diary of a Teenage Girl to grab my full attention, and I'm guessing, for studio execs to green-light the project. Writer Marielle Heller spent years developing the movie from the novel of the same name, including a successful run as a play.
And all this prep work pays off. Minnie Goetz (British actress Bel Powley) is a wonder: totally believable as an unfiltered 15-year-old exploring her awakened sexuality. And those eyes! It's 1970s San Francisco, awash in drugs, and the best advice Minnie's irresponsible single mother (beautifully played by Kristen Wiig) can offer her daughter is to flaunt herself more.
Minnie records her sexual adventures on a tape recorder as she develops her drawing talent in the Robert Crumb school of erotic art. Graphic sex is enacted without exploitation. This one goes on my Oscar list.
