Review of The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015) by David B — 29 Jul 2016
If you can get past the 'ick factor' of a pervert stepdad flirting and molesting/raping his teenage stepdaughter, Bel Powley (who I feel resembles both Molly Soda and Chloe Moretz) is a very good actress - too good for this movie.
I feel like it tried to have deep, poignant moments but the only thing that really stuck with me was probably meant as a cast off scene - it revealed how fragile boys can be and how that carries into adulthood so often. When Minnie stops the teenage fumbling of her conquest and insists on climbing on top to take control of her own pleasure, the boy has no clue how to act; or when she's engaged in backseat fumbling, the boy says she is "too intense".
Besides being uncomfortable the whole time with the taboo, I didn't really feel anything one way or the other with this and I feel like that is one of the worst things that can be said about a movie. A story about a teenager who doesn't know what they are doing or how to act is just not an interesting plot point.
