Review of The Arbor (2010) by Tara H — 15 Mar 2016
Drama-documentary about Andrea Dunbar, author of the brilliant Rita Sue & Bob Too, who lived on the same Bradford council estate until her death at 29. The directors' technique of having actors lip-sync their subjects' words is new to me, and rather unsettling but flawlessly executed.
Seeing how her daughter's life had turned out was rather tragic, and it also showed her family's differing views on who was to blame. As a playwright Dunbar was certainly a great loss. This film made me think about how little life has changed for those born on the wrong side of the tracks, and how easily communities can self-destruct.
The feeling of claustrophobia is tangible.
