Review of The American Astronaut (2001) by Aaron W — 30 Jan 2010
Easily one of the most original and fascinating films of the 2000s. Part western, part 1950s sci-fi, part musical, shot like a noir. It tells the story of the space cowboy Samuel Curtis who takes a job replacing the only male on Venus so that the remains of the last male there can be shipped back to earth.
He sets out with a suitcase containing " a real live woman" to trade for "the boy who actually saw a woman's breast" on Jupiter. All the while he is followed by the villainous Professor Hess who's dead set on turning all of Curtis's acquaintances to sand.
It's a strange, surprising, hilarious and beautiful film that deserves more recognition than it has received.
