Review of Summer Hours (2008) by David S — 13 May 2010
Tender but unsentimental tale of a family losing not only its matriarch, but all of the physical objects associated with the memories. I can't think of another film that is so immersed in how much our past is tied up in the sense memories of objects, and how difficult it can be to give those up.
The film in its modest way also addresses the idea of immortality, both through those objects, through art, and through families that create new meanings and new interpretations based on generational differences.
This is a wonderful film.
